Travelling inland along the valley of the Bega River, the road ambles through rich dairy and beef country, passing the historic pastoral estate of Kameruka, and arriving at the delightful little village of Candelo.

With all its country charms, Candelo was established 150 years ago and retains the peaceful village image and atmosphere.

On the first Sunday of every month the atmosphere is transformed by the many visitors who flock to the markets. This thriving market sees over 150 stall holders on the banks of the Candelo river and displays a wide variety of arts, craft, clothes, books and fresh produce.

Earlier settlers of Candelo had the foresight to establish the beautiful park beside the river, and today it offers shade in summer, a spectacular colour show in Autumn and a year-round meeting place for locals and visitors.

Sapphire Speedway

Get involved with the Sapphire Speedway, just 15 km west of Candelo at Tantawangalo. The home of South Coast Racing for the Bega Valley Shire.

Watch the Bikes, Carts, Cars and Super Sedans as they tear up the clay at the Tantawangalo track.

Catering is provided and a full race meet is usually the norm.

It will beckon you as you drive past, so why not stop for a while, admire the trees, paddle in the creek and explore the village. Candelo today still retains many of its nineteenth century old buildings.

Offering a warm and open reception to travellers, they are invited to share in the every day lives of the countryfolk. Although bullock teams no longer pass through town and there is little need for blacksmith's shops, a walk along these streets conjures up images of a past way of life.

Venturing further afield, Candelo is surrounded by beautiful old forests and clear waterways. A drive up Myrtle Mountain to the lookout is rewarded with magnificent distant views over the valley and a perfect secluded picnic spot under old trees.

The South East Forests National Park includes Tantawangalo forest and Six Mile Creek Camping and Picnic area. It is easily accessible at the end of a pleasant drive through undulating farmland.

Another way of seeing the countryside is on horseback. Excellent rural views will take your breath away. Guided rides are available with a local horse riding operator.
